‘Viscera’ refers to the internal organs of the body, such as the stomach, liver, and intestines. Surrounding and supporting these organs is a complex network of connective tissue (fascia). For the body to move freely, these internal tissues must be able to glide smoothly against one another during daily movement and breathing. When tissue tightness or postural strain limits this natural glide, it can create patterns of tension that ripple outward into the surrounding muscles and joints. Visceral Manipulation is a gentle manual therapy that evaluates fascial mobility throughout the torso. Using light, precise compression and gentle soft-tissue mobilization, this work helps release areas of restricted tissue glide. By restoring ease and mobility to these deep structural pathways, Visceral Manipulation supports overall postural balance, ease of movement, and whole-body comfort.
Developed by French manual therapy pioneer Jean-Pierre Barral in the 1970s, this approach focuses on supporting the body’s natural capacity for self-regulation and structural balance.
